Standing in a wide sandy bay, this magnificent masterpiece is no doubt one of France’s architectural icons. Work commenced on this rocky islet in the 8th century, and by the 10th century the monastery was founded, consisting of delicate double arched cloisters and a labyrinth of gothic chambers, an amazing feat considering its situation surrounded by quicksand at low tide and deep water at high tide.

Over the proceeding years new buildings were added, and the town of Mont-Saint Michel grew up underneath the towering edifice of the monastery, clinging precariously to the steep craggy sides. Massive walls and buttresses encompass the Mont and offer protection from the outside world and must have been a welcome sight to the many weary pilgrims who travelled from across Europe over the centuries. Today the main street is lined with shops, hotels and restaurants, each with its own spectacular vista of the bay. Photo by ©n4normandy
