The D Day podcast contains over 100 original photos from the US and Canadian archives as well as modern photos and very moving sound effects. 1.     Musee de la liberation

a-liberation-mus-frontThe liberation Museum is in an original old fort built in the 1850’s. It has a prominent position overlooking Cherbourg with panoramic views of the town and harbour. The many displays explain the role of Cherbourg as a supply base for the allies and life under the occupation.

2.     Memorial Quineville

Quinville Museum Street-3The Quniville museum gives an insight into what life was like living under the occupation. This includes everyday things that we take for granted including food rationing, transport and clothing. The people of France had to completely adapt they way that they lived.  The museum has built reconstructed streets with mannequins, which visitors can walk through and step back in time.

3.     Museum de la Batterie de Grisbecq

Grisbecq-2About a ten minute drive from St-Mere-Eglise is St Marcouf. In this location the Germans established a marine coastal battery at the beginning of 1942. The battery was placed here to cover a wide area of the beaches forming part of the Atlantic Wall.

4.     Musee Airborne

ste-mere-eglise-para-on-churchThe church at Sainte-Mere-Eglise has an effigy of John Steele the famous paratrooper whose parachute was caught on the church spire. The airborne museum has two buildings. The first museum is in the shape of a parachute that houses a life size Waco Glider as well as many other displays.

5.     Musee du debarquement-Utah Beach

utah-mus-frontUtah Beach museum was created on the site of the US landing on 6th June 1944 and built around an original bunker. Here you will find some excellent 3D models explaining the landing on Utah Beach. There are also films, landing craft and many models and documents bringing to life 1099. Outside is a statue dedicated to the seamen who lost their lives on that fateful landing as well as a tank and landing craft.

6.      Ste-Marie-Du-Mont

ste-marie-du-mont-museumThe museum is in a house in Ste-Marie-Du-Mont that was used during the war as a German garrison post.  Ste-Marie-Du-Mont is a short drive from Utah Beach and was the first village to be liberated. It shows how the house was used with the aid of uniformed mannequins. The house includes the rest room and the original paintings that were drawn by the German occupants, on the interior walls. You can visit this museum on the way to or back from Utah Beach museum.

7.     Dead Man’s Corner Museum

DSC00070On route to capture the town of Carentan the 101st by the only road from Utah Beach they came under heavy at the junction between Carentan and Saint-Côme-du-Mont. Here a tank was was disabled by a German rocket which killed the commander. At first the paratroopers called it ‘the corner with the dead guy in the tank’ which was later shortened to Dead Man’s Corner.

8.     Maisy Battery

maisy-battery-gun-camoflagedHistory was literally unearthed when the Maisy Battery was discovered having been kept a secret from the allies and local people.

Opened in 2007 it is adding new information to the D Day Landings and its role in the Atlantic Wall. Visitors can walk around trenches to bunkers used as store rooms and a hospital.

9.     Musée des Rangers

rangers-mus-frontThe Musee des Rangers is centered around the story of a  crack American unit who were trained especially for the D Day assignment of taking Pointe du Hoc. It was essential that this strategic location was disarmed to provide safe landing for the allied troops. Their story is told using videos and static displays and will give you a greater understanding when you visit Pointe du Hoc which is near by.

10.     La Pointe du Hoc

pointe-du-hoc-cliffPointe du Hoc is to the east of Grandcamp Maisy. The cliffs drastically change to a sheer 30 meter climb over the beach. You will get a good perspective of the challange that lay ahead. Here the Germans had built a heavy artillery battery. It was designed to protect the coastline form the allies and an obvious threat to the success of the D Day Operation.

12.     Musée Mémorial d’Omaha Beach

There are displays depicting daily life under the occupation and a short video. There is also a large collection of Military hardware, vehicles, uniforms and personal effects.

23.          Omaha Cemetery Visitor Centre

omaha-cem-display-1We have included the Omaha Cemetery here because it has a very good visitors centre that is a moving and insightful experience telling the story of Operation Overlord and the Omaha Beach landings. The American is the largest of the invasion cemeteries, and contains over 9000 graves. Long lines of white marble grave stones rest peacefully against the green background of the Normandy countryside. The film “Saving Private Ryan” with its opening scenes may make the scenario familiar. Read more. Return to map click here

13.     Batterie de Longues sur mer

longues-gun-2Located in the area of Gold Beach there were four Bunkers. These were placed to attack a naval invasion. In action during the morning of the 6th June 1944, the guns can still be seen in their original place.

20.     Musée du mur de l’Atlantique

This was the original German head-quarters that controlled the gun batteries designed to protect the coast of Normandy. The 6 story tower has been restored to its original condition and re-equipped. There is also a sick bay, observation room and the radio transmission room.

21.     Musée de la Batterie de Merville

merville-batteryAt this battery every 30 minutes a siren announces the start of a re-enactment of the bombing of June 1944 including smoke, sound and light animation. It is such a realistic experience that it is not for children under the age of 8 or for those who are claustrophobic, have a nervous disposition or heart problems.

22.     Mémorial Pegasus

24.     Caen Memorial
