Normandy France home of Mont saint Michel, D Day invasion and Bayeux Tapestry

Dieppe

It was from Dieppe that Giovanni Verrazzano set sail and founded what was to become New York. Vast quantities of fruit and almost forty percent of Frances shellfish are unloaded on Dieppe’s docks, and the stalls on the quays are a real treat. Overlooking the seafront, the medieval Chateau houses the Musee de Dieppe and displays ivories, local history information, and some fine galleries with art by Braque, Pissaro, Renoir, Duffy, Sickert and Boudin. The lawns between the wide shingle beach and the town have a very English feel about them and hold the towns kite flying festival. The Cite de la Mer with its nautical displays and aquariums of marine life found in the channel is situated just west of the main harbour. Return to Seine-Maritime page
