Normandy France home of Mont saint Michel, D Day invasion and Bayeux Tapestry
Caudebec-en-Caux
Sadly the town was ravaged in the war, but still retains the flamboyant Eglise Notre-Dame, octagonal spire standing proud over the market square and the 13th Century Maison des Templiers, a strong stone building housing the Musee de le Marine de Seine. The market a hive of activities on a Saturday morning, with covered stalls, enticing produce on display was established in 1390, when given its charter. South of the town a memorial in the form of a biplane protruding from the rock commemorates five aviators who were lost trying to save Italian balloonists off Spitzbergen in the cold Arctic wastes in 1920.
