From the craggy Chateau ruins, views across its spectacular flower bedecked gardens and onwards are lovely. The castle keep, walls and ramparts on its rock, were constructed in 1092 AD by King Henry I of England, the grandson of the famous Conqueror, and was a favourite of Henry II and his queen Eleanor of Aquitaine.

St Thomas a Becket visited and held mass in the Notre-Dame-sur-l’Eau, Domfront, an 11th Century church down by the river at Christmas 1166 AD. Domfront town is a feast to the eyes with a multitude of half timbered houses, its cobbled streets and pretty market square huddled around the chateau, a slender footbridge linking town and castle.
