Normandy France home of Mont saint Michel, D Day invasion and Bayeux Tapestry

Agentan

There is a ruined castle in the town centre, and the flamboyant church of St-Germain that stands opposite a turreted 14th century Chateau, that now acts as the local law courts. Boats trips along the river Orne, a busy market on Tuesdays, not to mention the numerous equestrian centres, studs, and race tracks which make for an interesting visit. Incidentally it was at Argentan that four knights in service to Henry II of England set forth to rid the king of his “turbulent priest”. That said priest was then murdered on New Years day 1171, and became known in the annals of history as St Thomas a Becket. Lace making was once the foremost industry of the town and rivalled that of Alencon. Return to Orne page
