Caen

The Abbaye Aux Dames is the final resting place of Queen Matilda, the conquerors wife, and contains fine crypts and beautiful columns, the Abbaye Aux Hommes fragments of King Williams remains. The later classical 18th century monastic building now houses the Hotel de Ville. The excellent Caen memorial museum sets out to capture vivid overviews of world conflicts since 1918 to present times. Cean despite its terrible bombardment during World War II has managed to establish a vibrant and airy city centre.Return to Calvados page
